Rwanda, Kenya or South Africa: Which Luxury Safari Is Right for You?

By Sebastian Taskila · 2 November 2026

Rwanda, Kenya and South Africa are three different kinds of safari, and the right one depends on what you want to feel. Rwanda is built around a single morning: an hour in the company of a gorilla family, with the days around it arranged in private. Kenya is the safari of open horizons, the Great Migration between July and October, and camps in private conservancies where the night drives begin after everyone else has gone to bed. South Africa is the one for leopards, with private reserves where your guide leaves the road to follow the animal, and lodges where dinner is the second event of the day. Whichever of the three is calling you, we will build a custom safari itinerary around it.

Rwanda, Kenya and South Africa at a glance

Here is the picture before the detail.

Rwanda: one hour with a gorilla family. This is for the traveller who wants a single encounter, done perfectly. The wildlife is the mountain gorilla, with golden monkeys as a second trek. You fly into Kigali, then cross the Virunga volcanoes by private helicopter, or take the road, about two and a half hours. Zameera's journey runs eight days, with two treks and the time around them. The luxury is a private villa or small lodge, a private trek and a house team.

Kenya: the classic safari at full scale. This is for the traveller who wants open plains, big cats and the migration. The wildlife is lion, elephant, cheetah and the wildebeest herds. You fly into Nairobi, then a short private flight or helicopter takes you into the Mara. Our journeys run from five to ten nights. The luxury is a tented camp or private villa in a conservancy that allows only a limited number of camps.

South Africa: leopards, and a guide who will follow them. This is for the traveller who wants leopards, and wants everything else to run quietly. The wildlife is leopard, lion, rhino, elephant and buffalo. It is about an hour by air from Johannesburg to Skukuza, then a short transfer to the lodge. Our Sabi Sands journey is five nights. The luxury is a private homestead with a dedicated guide and tracker, with food and wine part of the stay.

Wildlife and experience: gorilla trekking vs the Big Five

Ask yourself whether you want one encounter that you will talk about for years, or a week of sightings that keep changing. Rwanda gives you the first. Kenya and South Africa give you the second.

Rwanda: an hour with a gorilla family

The day begins at park headquarters in Kinigi, at the foot of the Virunga volcanoes, where trekkers gather by 7 am and are assigned to a single gorilla family, in groups of no more than eight. Then you walk, up through bamboo and forest, for a couple of hours or for most of the day, until the guides slow down and the vegetation ahead of you begins to move.

After that you have one hour. It is one of the shortest and most guarded wildlife encounters in the world, and it is priced to match. At the time of writing, a permit for an international visitor costs $1,500 per person, and the minimum age is 15. The rules and current rates are published by Visit Rwanda. The price is also protective. Mountain gorillas number a little over 1,000 and remain endangered, and a share of the revenue goes to the communities around the park. You are paying for the animals to stay where they are.

Zameera's eight-day silverback gorilla trekking journey is shaped around that morning. It includes two treks, one of them private, then golden monkey tracking, a visit to the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund campus and a helicopter flight out over the volcanoes to Kigali. For a family or a group of friends, the private family gorilla trek on the Volcanoes of Rwanda trades the lodge for a villa on the edge of the park, with its own house manager, chef and driver-guides, a heated pool and a cinema.

Kenya: the open plains, before dawn and after dark

Kenya is the safari people picture, and it is as large as the picture. The grass runs to the horizon, single acacias stand against the sky, and from July to October the wildebeest herds move into the Maasai Mara in numbers that are hard to take in. The river crossings come mostly between August and October. No one can promise you one, and the honest operators do not.

What separates a private conservancy from the national reserve is freedom. Conservancies lie north and east of the reserve and allow only a limited number of camps, and they permit what the reserve does not: night drives and walking safaris. You can follow a leopard by spotlight after dinner, then walk the same ground at first light with a Maasai guide. The Kenya Tourism Board maps the main regions.

Zameera's ten-night private safari in the Maasai Mara is built around that access. A balloon flight carries a photographer in the basket, a helicopter takes you to the Mara Elephant Project, and you spend time with the Mara-Meru Cheetah Project, which makes it closer to an expedition than a holiday. For five nights, a private villa in the Olderkesi Conservancy comes with a private chef, guide and vehicle, a 25-metre pool and a private balloon flight that lands at a Champagne breakfast.

South Africa: leopards, and a guide who will leave the road

The Sabi Sands covers about 65,000 hectares in Mpumalanga, and its eastern boundary with Kruger has no fence, so lions, elephants and leopards cross freely. For you, the difference is one rule. In the Sabi Sands a guide can drive off the road to stay with an animal. In Kruger, vehicles keep to the roads. So when a leopard walks into the long grass at dusk, your guide and tracker follow, and you stay with the cat instead of watching it disappear. South African National Parks covers the national park next door.

The rest of the day is arranged to match. There is dawn and dusk driving, a spotlight drive after dark, and dinner in the boma, with a chef who cooks for your table alone.

Zameera's private safari with the leopards of the Sabi Sands is five nights in a private stone homestead. The guide and tracker are yours for the whole stay, the pool looks over a waterhole, and the chef is private.

Best time to visit: when each country is at its best

Rwanda is the most flexible, Kenya the most seasonal, and in South Africa the dry months are when the bush is at its clearest.

When is the best time to see gorillas in Rwanda?

Treks run all year. The long dry season from June to September and the short one from December to February make the walking easier and the trails clearer.

When is the Great Migration in Kenya?

The herds cross into the Maasai Mara between July and October. Crossings cluster from August to October, though no one can promise one, and the viewing points can get busy from July to September. If the migration is your reason for going, a private conservancy is how you watch it without a crowd. If it is not, the quieter months mean fewer vehicles and a calmer pace.

When is the best time for a Sabi Sands safari?

May to September, the dry season. The bush thins out, animals gather around water and leopards are easier to find.

Getting there is part of the trip

On a private safari, the transfers are among the best hours of the journey.

Rwanda: over the volcanoes by helicopter

The park is about 105 kilometres from Kigali, roughly two and a half hours by road. There are no scheduled flights to it, which is why a private journey so often begins or ends with a charter helicopter across the Virunga volcanoes. It turns a long drive into a flight over the volcanoes themselves.

Kenya: straight into the conservancy

From Nairobi, a short private flight or helicopter puts you in the Mara within hours of landing, so the first game drive can come on the same day.

South Africa: an hour to the bush

Fly from O.R. Tambo in Johannesburg to Skukuza in about an hour, and the lodge team meets you for the short transfer. A private charter to a lodge airstrip takes roughly an hour and a half to two hours door to door, so you can be on your first evening drive within hours of leaving the city.

Private-use villas versus shared camps

In all three countries the top end is the exclusive-use villa or homestead: a private guide, tracker and chef, and a timetable set around your group instead of the lodge. It is the clearest way to avoid sharing a vehicle, and it is where most of the difference in price comes from.

Frequently asked questions

Can you combine Rwanda and Kenya in one trip?

Yes, and it is one of the best pairings, because it gives you a primate trek and open-plains game viewing in a single trip. Direct flights connect Kigali and Nairobi, and a private charter can shorten the connection. Do the gorilla trek first, while you are fresh for the walking, then finish in the Mara. Allow twelve to fourteen nights so neither half feels rushed.

Which safari is best for first-time luxury travellers?

South Africa or Kenya, depending on what you want. South Africa is the easier first safari, with short transfers and leopards in the Sabi Sands. Kenya is the classic if the migration or a Maasai-led walk is the draw. Rwanda is usually better as a second trip or an addition, because it is one experience rather than a full safari.

How long should a luxury safari be in each country?

Long enough to let each place do what it does best. Zameera's Rwanda journey runs eight days, with two treks, golden monkey tracking and time around them. Kenya runs from five to ten nights, which gives the conservancy and the migration room. In the Sabi Sands, five nights lets you work through dawn, dusk and spotlight drives with the same guide and tracker.

How far ahead should you book a gorilla trek?

As soon as your dates are fixed. Permits are issued for a fixed number of treks each day, and the permit date then sets your flights and lodging. June to September is the period to secure first.

What makes Zameera different from other luxury safari companies?

Zameera is a Dubai-based ultra-luxury travel and experiences company, and we curate journeys for ultra-high-net-worth travellers rather than selling rooms. Each journey is designed as a whole: a private guide, vehicle and chef, and the permits, charters and transfers arranged around your dates, so the safari is yours from arrival to departure. We choose the places and specialists we work with carefully, and we shape every trip around your group. The same approach runs through the rest of what we do, from private island buyouts to fully private expeditions.

How do you choose the best luxury safari?

Choose by the encounter you want most, then check the season, then decide how private you want it to be. If the moment you are after is a gorilla looking back at you, choose Rwanda. If it is a river full of wildebeest, choose Kenya. If it is a leopard in the last of the light, choose South Africa. The season follows from that choice. A Rwanda permit fixes your dates, the migration in Kenya runs from July to October, and the Sabi Sands is at its clearest from May to September. Privacy is the last decision and the one that changes the trip most: a private villa or homestead, with your own guide and vehicle, is where the best safaris are. If you would like to see how these fit together for your group, request a custom experience and tell us the dates, who is travelling and the animal you most want to see. We shape each trip around your group, from the permits to the private charters. You can also see the full range at Zameera.
