The Luxury Travel Calendar 2027: Events and Seasons Worth the Journey

By Oliver Ikaheimonen · 2 November 2026

Every January, private banks and lifestyle titles circulate the same luxury travel calendar for the year ahead: Davos and Wimbledon, Monaco and Art Basel. I set out to build a better version of it for 2027.

I wanted to see where demand would concentrate, so that Zameera could contract against it early instead of chasing it late. I took every date from the organiser, not a secondary source. The list reached 258 entries, and by the end of it I no longer believed in the calendar I had set out to improve.

It fails for a simple reason: it sorts the year by status. Davos, Wimbledon, Monaco and Art Basel tell you where people want to be seen, not what is worth going for. Their fame also keeps them well supplied, because it supports an entire industry of hospitality packages, corporate boxes, villa agents and brokers. Decide in April that you want to be at Wimbledon in June and you will get in, at a price set by demand rather than by any real limit.

Augusta is the exception. It is famous and its badges are still close to impossible to obtain, but that is particular to Augusta. Fame does not create scarcity on its own.

The better question is whether the thing itself is worth the journey, and what it takes to be there when it happens. Sometimes that is a permit, a season or a relationship built over years. Sometimes it is only being in the right town on the right night. The received calendar handles neither.

The half that nobody publishes

Start with what the conventional calendar leaves out entirely: the travel seasons. The Antarctic season opens in late October and runs into March. Grey whales enter the Baja lagoons for the winter. Emperor penguin colonies in the Antarctic interior can be reached for a few weeks a year. The northern lights return with the dark, and the Mara River crossings arrive when the rain, the grass and the herds allow. None of it has an organiser announcing that booking is open.

These were the hardest entries to compile and they are among the hardest to deliver, because where there is no ticket, the accommodation is the ticket. A camp in the right place on the Mara has a fixed number of beds. Three operators hold permits for the whole of Silver Bank. Antarctica has few luxury camps, and landing rules cap how many passengers go ashore at once, so the right ship and the right berth are the real constraint. What makes a season plannable is its length. Weather and wildlife move, but several weeks give you room to work around them. A single fixed date gives you none.

Time, not price

Seasons are one kind of limit. The other sits inside events that have both a date and a gate, and it is misread more often, because the gate is rarely the ticket. Many of the best boxes at the Vienna Opera Ball are held by long-standing patrons, and the most expensive ticket does not buy you one. Many of the windows and balconies over Siena's Piazza del Campo belong to private households, so the best positions are not for sale in the ordinary way.

In both cases the limit is not money. It is access built up over years. TEFAF is a softer case: for one week a large part of the international art trade moves to Maastricht and the city fills around it. That is a real constraint, and lead time and money solve it.

The ones with no gate at all

Then there is everything with no gate at all. Las Fallas is free, and Valencia burns what it spent a year building in front of anyone who booked a hotel. Ten of Siena's seventeen contrade race around a square anyone may stand in. Takayama has pulled its floats through the same streets for three hundred years and asks only that you are there on the right two days.

These pass a different test. They are not hard to reach. They are worth crossing the world for, and the received calendar misses them for the same reason it misses the seasons: there is no package to sell, no box to allocate, and nobody whose business it is to remind you they exist. Separating the three kinds became most of the work.

The one date above all the others

If I had to throw away 257 entries, I would keep this one. Most people reading this saw the photographs of the August 2026 eclipse. On 12 August 2026 totality crossed Iceland and northern Spain and lasted two minutes and eighteen seconds at its longest. Much of Spain saw less.

On 2 August 2027 totality will last six minutes and twenty-three seconds: close to three times the maximum of the August 2026 eclipse, and almost four times what much of Spain experienced. It is the longest total solar eclipse over accessible land this century. The path crosses Gibraltar, Tangier, Luxor, Jeddah and Mecca, and the point of greatest duration lies about sixty kilometres southeast of Luxor.

The eclipse cannot sell out. The places to watch it from can. Egypt has a finite number of exceptional hotels and the Nile's dahabiya fleet is smaller still, so the number of people who will watch six minutes of darkness from the right stretch of river is already being decided.

A total eclipse this long will not be visible from land again until 2114. The calendar that circulates every January will give its August to a film festival and a tennis tournament.

The Calendar

November 2026 to December 2027. What follows is the shortlist drawn from the 258 entries. Nothing is here because it is fashionable, and several well-known dates are missing because all they reliably offer now is a crowd. The famous dates that remain earn their place on something specific: a centenary, a first, a field of fifty cars. The natural seasons already under way are listed from November, with how long each still runs.

November 2026

Under way, to the end of March · Aurora season · Tromsø, Lofoten, Svalbard, Finnish Lapland, Iceland. Six months of dark northern nights, from late September to the end of March. Solar activity remains elevated following the maximum of Solar Cycle 25.

Under way, into March, and again from late October 2027 · Antarctic season · Peninsula, South Georgia, Ross Sea. The months the far south becomes reachable. Landing rules restrict how many passengers can go ashore at once, so the strongest expedition departures are often spoken for years ahead.

Under way, to January · Orca and humpback herring run · Northern Norway. Each winter the herring gather in the northern fjords and orca and humpbacks follow them in. The location shifts from year to year, so even knowing the season does not tell you exactly where the encounter will happen.

November to December, and again in 2027 · Emperor penguin window · Antarctic interior. The few weeks each year when emperor colonies can be reached by ski-equipped aircraft flying inland onto blue ice. Fewer people stand at a colony in a season than summit Everest.

December 2026

7 December · Prima della Scala · Milan. La Scala opens its season every 7 December, on the feast day of Milan's patron Saint Ambrose. In 2026 it is Verdi's Otello, conducted by Myung-Whun Chung. Two thousand people sit inside the theatre while millions more watch live across Italy.

January 2027

9 to 23 January · Dakar Rally · Portugal and Morocco. The 2027 edition moves out of Saudi Arabia for one year and returns to Africa for the first time since 2007: a prologue in the Algarve, a ferry across the Mediterranean, then twelve stages through Morocco to a finish in Marrakech. Saudi Arabia hosts again in 2028 for the fiftieth running. If Formula One and Le Mans are motorsport watched from a grandstand, this is the other thing entirely: no circuit, no seats, and a bivouac that moves across the desert each night. You follow it by air and by 4x4, and where you stand is decided by the route, not by a ticket.

From January · Grey whale season opens · Baja California. Grey whales calve in Baja's lagoons from January to March. In San Ignacio and Magdalena Bay, mothers are known to approach the boats themselves and bring their calves alongside.

January to April · Silver Bank humpback season · Dominican Republic. Thousands of humpbacks gather on a submerged bank more than a hundred kilometres north of the Dominican coast to calve and mate. Three operators hold permits for the entire bank, and around six hundred people reach it in a season.

January · President's Cup for Falconry · Al Falah, Abu Dhabi. For most of January, falconers from across the Gulf bring their birds to Al Falah for the Abu Dhabi Falconers Club's championship. The races last seconds, but a winning bird can become one of the most valuable falcons anywhere.

February 2027

February and March · Snow leopard season · Ladakh. Winter brings blue sheep lower into the valleys around Hemis, and the snow leopards follow. Hours can pass scanning a mountainside before an animal that seemed absent suddenly becomes visible among the rock.

4 February · 69th Vienna Opera Ball · Wiener Staatsoper. For one night, the stalls of the Staatsoper are covered over to create a ballroom and the debutante couples open the floor. Tickets can be bought. The boxes are another matter: many pass between the same families and patrons year after year.

7, 14 & 21 February · White Turf · St Moritz. Thoroughbreds race across frozen Lake St Moritz over three Sundays, as they have since 1907; 2027 marks 120 years. It remains the only major race meeting of its kind.

March 2027

15 to 19 March · Las Fallas · Valencia. The neighbourhood workshops spend a year building hundreds of satirical sculptures, some the height of buildings. On the final night, Valencia sets fire to what it has spent the year making.

March (dates to be announced) · Saut Hermès · Grand Palais, Paris. Show jumping beneath the glass roof of the Grand Palais, with sand laid across the nave for the weekend. Horses first competed inside the building in 1901.

April 2027

14 to 15 April · Takayama Spring Festival · Gifu, Japan. Twelve gilded yatai floats, some around three hundred years old, move through Takayama's preserved streets while mechanical marionettes perform above the crowds. The same ritual has occupied these two April days for centuries.

Mid April · Feria de Abril · Seville. More than a thousand casetas appear beside the Guadalquivir for one week. Almost all belong to families, associations and clubs, so experiencing the Feria properly depends less on admission than on whose door opens for you.

May 2027

From 20 May · Glyndebourne Festival opens · East Sussex. Opera in a Sussex country house, with an interval long enough for the audience to leave the theatre and dine across the gardens in evening dress. The 2027 season opens with a new production of Mozart's Idomeneo. The ritual has remained central to Glyndebourne since the festival began in 1934.

21 to 23 May (expected) · Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este · Lake Como. Around fifty exceptional cars are invited into the gardens of Villa d'Este and judged beside Lake Como. The field is deliberately small, which is part of why the event has retained its character since 1929.

June 2027

June to November · Hanifaru Bay manta season · Baa Atoll, Maldives. During the southwest monsoon, plankton is pushed into a bay the size of a football pitch and reef mantas arrive to feed in their dozens, sometimes more than a hundred at once. The bay sits inside a UNESCO biosphere reserve: snorkelling only, a cap on how many people may be in the water at once, and a ranger deciding when you go in.

12 June to 19 September · documenta 16 opens · Kassel. A hundred-day exhibition held once every five years, founded in 1955 to reconnect postwar Germany with modern art. Miss this edition and the next one does not arrive until 2032.

July 2027

10 to 18 July · Louis Vuitton 38th America's Cup Match · Gulf of Naples. The oldest trophy in international sport, first contested in 1851, and the first America's Cup Match ever hosted by Italy. Some of the most advanced sailing yachts ever built will race in the Gulf of Naples.

August 2027

August to September · Mara River crossings · Northern Serengeti and Masai Mara. Hundreds of thousands of wildebeest reach the Mara during one of the last great overland migrations on earth. The herds may gather at the bank for hours or days before one animal commits and thousands follow.

2 August · Total solar eclipse · Luxor. Six minutes and twenty-three seconds of totality, close to three times the maximum of the August 2026 eclipse. No other total solar eclipse over accessible land this century will last as long.

16 August · Palio dell'Assunta · Siena. Ten of Siena's seventeen contrade race bareback around the Piazza del Campo. The race lasts about ninety seconds, while the rivalries surrounding it are measured in centuries.

September 2027

17 to 19 September · The 46th Ryder Cup · Adare Manor. Europe against the United States over three days, with none of the detachment players carry through normal tournament golf. 2027 marks one hundred years since the first Ryder Cup in 1927, and it returns to Ireland for the first time since 2006.

October 2027

October to December · Alba white truffle season · Piedmont. The prized white truffle grows wild in a small part of Piedmont and has never been successfully cultivated at scale. Each autumn, what the forest produces is effectively all there is.

October to November · Bhutan trekking and festival season. Clear Himalayan weather coincides with the autumn tsechus, when masked dances fill monastery and dzong courtyards. Many of these rituals have been performed in the same places for centuries.

November 2027

From November, through the winter · Sperm whale season · Dominica. Resident sperm whale families live off Dominica's west coast and are known individually through years of research. Swimming with them requires a government permit.

Third weekend of November (expected) · 167th Hospices de Beaune wine sale · Burgundy. A charity auction of barrels from vineyards the Hospices has accumulated through more than five centuries of gifts and bequests. The prices reached in Beaune become one of the first signals of how the new Burgundy vintage will be valued.

Mid November · La Paulée de Meursault · Burgundy. The closing lunch of Les Trois Glorieuses, where growers arrive carrying rare bottles from their own cellars to open for the table. It has been held since 1923 and attendance begins with an invitation from the domaines.

Mid November · Marquee auction week · New York. Within a few days, an extraordinary concentration of art value moves through New York's evening sales. Seats inside the rooms are allocated by the auction houses, even when the bidders themselves are spending tens of millions.

Mid November to early December · Argentine Open · Campo Argentino de Polo, Palermo. The game's highest team handicap is forty goals, and Palermo is where 40-goal teams regularly appear at the top level. For the best players and horses in the world, Palermo is the standard everything else is measured against.

December 2027

26 December · Rolex Sydney Hobart start · Sydney Harbour. Six hundred and twenty-eight nautical miles from Sydney to Tasmania, starting on Boxing Day in front of a harbour full of spectators. Most watch the fleet disappear through the Heads. A much smaller number keep going south.
