The Wild Detox

7 nights of luxury digital detox at NIHI Sumba

7 nights at NIHI Sumba, a Three MICHELIN Key resort on the remote western edge of Sumba. This is a device-free full board journey shaped for guests who want to leave the outside world behind without losing beauty, depth or momentum. The stay is centred on Mamole Treehouse, elevated in ancient forest above the Indian Ocean, with days that bring you closer to horses, water, land, silence and Sumbanese life.

Experience Overview

A Return to the World Around You

NIHI Sumba is not a resort that asks to be consumed through a screen. Its beauty is physical, immediate and alive: a 2.5-kilometre beach, wild horses, open-air dining, surf, jungle valleys, rice fields and the quiet intensity of Sumbanese culture. Over 7 nights, the stay replaces noise with presence. With devices stored away, mornings feel longer, meals are not interrupted and the beach is not something to capture, but somewhere to be.

The Detox

Devices are handed to the villa butler for safekeeping on arrival and returned before departure. The experience is curated so the absence of screens feels natural, with enough beauty, movement and human connection to make the outside world feel distant.

The Treehouse

The Treehouse

Mamole Treehouse is the base accommodation for the stay. Set in ancient forest, with three elevated king bedrooms and sweeping Indian Ocean views, it brings the experience close to nature without losing comfort or privacy.

The Spa Safari

The Spa Safari

The Spa Safari at Nihioka is the centrepiece of the journey. Arrive by horseback, breakfast above a private coastal cove, then spend the day between treatments, freshwater pool, beaches and the valley's quiet beauty.

Mamole Treehouse

Mamole Treehouse

Mamole Treehouse is the base for the stay, set in ancient forest above the Indian Ocean. Its elevated bedrooms and closeness to nature make it especially fitting for a digital detox.

Device-Free Stay

Device-Free Stay

Phones, laptops and tablets are stored safely with the villa butler for the duration of the stay. The point is not absence for its own sake, but the return of attention to sleep, weather, conversation, movement and place.

Nihiwatu Beach

Nihiwatu Beach

The resort sits beside a 2.5-kilometre stretch of private coastline. It is one of the defining landscapes of the experience, with surf, long walks, horseback riding, beach dinners and the Sandalwood horses moving along the sand.

Swimming with Horses

Swimming with Horses

This is one of NIHI's most memorable experiences. As the tide recedes, guests ride bareback along the beach with a Sumbanese horseman before entering the Indian Ocean with the horse swimming beside them.

Spa Safari at Nihioka

Spa Safari at Nihioka

The Spa Safari is NIHI's signature wellness journey. For this stay, the 90-minute horseback arrival is the most fitting route, moving along the coast, through hills and past villages before a day of treatments at Nihioka.

Nihioka Valley

Nihioka Valley

Nihioka sits on private land 5 kilometres from the resort, framed by rice fields, jungle and ocean. Breakfast is served above a coastal cove before spa treatments, pool time and access to quiet beaches.

Sumbanese Horses

Sumbanese Horses

Horses are part of the island's identity. The journey includes riding, ocean swimming and equine wellness, giving guests a closer connection to Sumba's Sandalwood ponies and the culture around them.

Yoga by the Beach

Yoga by the Beach

Daily complimentary yoga classes bring structure to the stay without making it feel rigid. Hatha, Yin, Restorative and Vinyasa formats offer different ways to begin or close the day.

Sumba Foundation

Sumba Foundation

The programme includes opportunities to engage with the Sumba Foundation's education and community work. The English Class experience brings guests into a local learning environment through conversation, games and exchange.

The Highlands

The Highlands

The Lamboya Highland Trek moves through rural villages, farmland and coastal views before a picnic on Rice Island. It gives the detox a wider sense of Sumba beyond the resort.

Lapopu Waterfall

Lapopu Waterfall

Lapopu Waterfall sits in Wanukaka Valley, reached by scenic drive and a short walk. The falls drop over moss-covered rock into a clear pool where guests can swim when conditions allow.

Padel in the Tropics

Padel in the Tropics

NIHI has Sumba's first and only padel court, set among tropical greenery and open day and night. It adds a light, social kind of movement to the week.

Chocolate Making

Chocolate Making

Chris and Charly's Factory is NIHI's on-property chocolate workshop. Guests work directly with cacao and make their own chocolate, a small but memorable return to craft.

Kaboku

Kaboku

Kaboku is NIHI's intimate Japanese omakase concept near Nio Beach Club. Limited to six covers, it brings precision and ceremony into a stay otherwise shaped by wild landscape and open air.

Weekly Rituals

Weekly Rituals

The week can include the Monday Jungle Dinner, Wednesday Sumba Foundation Dinner, Saturday White Party and occasional Mini Pasola on the beach. These moments bring the resort's social life into the journey without overwhelming the detox.

What to Expect

Quiet, Wild and Fully Present

This is a luxury detox with substance. The point is not to sit in silence for a week. It is to make the world immediate again: horses in the surf, yoga by the beach, open-fire dinners, village paths, rice fields, waterfall swims, spa treatments and sleep without the constant pull of a screen.

The rhythm is active, but never crowded. Mornings are for movement, water or the land. Afternoons bring bodywork, beach time, craft or cultural exchange. Evenings are simple and atmospheric, with the island's weekly dinners, Ombak, Kaboku or time back at the villa.

The device handover changes the feeling of the stay quickly. Meals become longer, the beach becomes easier to notice, and the days begin to feel less fragmented. By the end, the luxury is not only the villa or the service. It is the rare feeling of being fully where you are.

The Story

Where Luxury Became Wild Again

NIHI Sumba began with a beach that surfers whispered about. Nihiwatu was remote, difficult to reach and known for one of Indonesia's great waves. Over time, the idea grew into something more than a surf hideaway. It became a resort built around land, horses, villages, wellness, adventure and the belief that luxury should not smooth away the place it inhabits.

That is why a digital detox belongs here. Sumba does not need to be softened or staged to hold attention. The island is full of texture: Marapu culture, village life, rice fields, jungle, limestone, horses, open ocean and long stretches of empty coast. Without devices, those details stop being background and become the experience itself.

The Sumba Foundation is part of the same story. NIHI's relationship with the island is tied to schools, clinics, malaria reduction and community programmes that reach beyond the resort. A week here is not only about withdrawing from the modern world. It is about returning to a human scale, where land, people and time are close enough to feel.
