Bali to Komodo, Indonesia

The Dragon Islands

A private Aqua Blu expedition from Bali to Komodo

7 nights aboard Aqua Blu, privately chartered through the islands between Bali and Komodo for up to 30 guests. The voyage enters a part of Indonesia that feels ancient, dry and elemental, where volcanic hills fall into clear water, coral reefs sit beneath quiet anchorages and Komodo dragons still move through the heat of the national park. It is a journey shaped by sea, wildlife and silence, with the comfort of a private yacht allowing the group to reach these islands gently and properly.

Experience Overview

A Private Voyage Through East Indonesia

East of Bali, Indonesia becomes wilder and more dramatic. The landscape changes from tropical green to open savannah, black volcanic slopes, ridgelines burnt gold by the dry season and bays held between steep folds of land. Komodo dragons give the region its mythic force, but the voyage reaches far beyond a single sighting, moving through islands where manta rays pass through the straits, whale sharks surface in Sumbawa waters, coral gardens sit close to shore and the evenings end with the yacht alone at anchor. Aqua Blu gives one group private access to this world, with the range, crew and expedition equipment to explore it with depth, comfort and care.

The Setting

The Setting

What Defines the Experience

Aqua Blu

Aqua Blu

Aqua Blu was built for long range cruising through remote Indonesian waters. The yacht has the presence of a private ship, but still feels intimate enough for one family or group to make it their own.

Private Charter

Private Charter

With the yacht reserved for one group, the voyage can be shaped around the guests travelling. Families can keep a softer pace, divers can spend more time in the water and celebrations can be arranged without sharing the ship with other travellers.

Komodo Dragons

Komodo Dragons

The dragon encounter is handled with local rangers and careful structure. Guests walk through the national park landscape with guides, watching for Komodo dragons, deer, birdlife and the dry island terrain that makes this part of Indonesia feel so different from Bali.

Sea Facing Cabins

Sea Facing Cabins

Every cabin faces the water, so the landscape remains close even from inside. Mornings begin with light across the sea, quiet anchorages and the first movement of tenders preparing for the day.

Moyo Island

Moyo Island

Moyo gives the voyage its first sense of arrival beyond Bali. The island is known for forest, waterfalls and clear reefs, with time ashore before guests return to the yacht for swimming and dinner at anchor.

Saleh Bay

Saleh Bay

Saleh Bay is one of the most special marine stops of the route. In the calm waters off Sumbawa, guests enter whale shark territory, with the possibility of seeing these enormous fish close to the surface.

Satonda

Satonda

Satonda is a small volcanic island with a crater lake at its centre. Kayaking along the coast and walking inland gives the group a sense of how varied these islands become within only a few hours of sailing.

Gili Banta

Gili Banta

Gili Banta is open, quiet and beautifully raw. The coastline is made for swimming, snorkelling and diving, while the ridges above the beach give wide views across the Flores Sea.

Gili Lawa

Gili Lawa

Gili Lawa has the gentle drama of Komodo at its best. Shallow reefs, pale beaches and dry hills sit together in one place, with kayaking, paddleboarding and reef snorkelling close to the yacht.

Padar Island

Padar Island

Padar is one of the great views of Indonesia. The hike rises through dry grassland and volcanic ridges, with steep land falling away on both sides and the island's curved bays opening below in separate arcs.

Horseshoe Bay

Horseshoe Bay

Horseshoe Bay sits inside an ancient volcanic caldera. The water is sheltered, the slopes rise steeply around the anchorage and sea eagles are often seen above the bay.

Pink Beach

Pink Beach

Pink Beach is formed by white sand mixed with tiny fragments of red coral. The shoreline is striking from the tender, but the reef just offshore is part of the pleasure, with clear water and easy snorkelling.

Linta Strait

Linta Strait

Linta Strait is one of the most alive parts of the voyage. The currents bring nutrients through the channel, drawing manta rays, reef fish, barracuda, giant trevallies and the kind of marine life that makes Komodo so respected by divers.

Dining on Board

Dining on Board

Meals are part of the private rhythm of the yacht. Expect Indonesian ingredients, fresh seafood, bright spice, relaxed lunches after the water and dinners that feel considered without becoming formal.

What to Expect

Indonesia by Private Sea

The first shift happens after Bali. The shoreline opens, the water deepens and the islands ahead begin to look less polished, with dark volcanic rock, dry ridges and beaches that appear only when the yacht draws close. Mornings are calm and bright, with breakfast served before the first landing or swim.

The experience becomes more varied as the route moves east. One day is forest and waterfall on Moyo. Another is the quiet tension of entering Komodo dragon habitat with rangers. Then the landscape changes again, into the steep ridges of Padar, the protected curve of Horseshoe Bay and the pink sand beaches where coral fragments colour the shore.

The sea is as important as the land. Reefs sit close enough for easy snorkelling, while deeper channels bring stronger movement and richer marine life. Manta rays, reef fish, whale sharks, barracuda and sea eagles all belong to the same journey. Some moments are active and salt filled. Others are very still, with the group watching the islands darken from the deck after dinner.

The Story

Islands on the Edge of Worlds

The islands between Bali and Flores sit along one of the most fascinating natural thresholds on earth. To the west, Asia. To the east, Australasia. Between them lies a region where species, currents, climates and cultures overlap in unusual ways. The Wallace Line, named after naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace, helped explain why animals on one side of Indonesia could differ so sharply from those on the other.

Komodo belongs to that sense of separation. Its dry hills and open savannah feel far from the lush image many travellers carry of Indonesia. The dragons are part of that otherness, ancient in appearance and still living in a landscape that demands respect. Long before the park became protected, local communities lived with these animals as neighbours, fishing, trading and moving carefully through the islands.

Aqua Blu enters this region by sea, which is the right way to understand it. The voyage follows the older logic of the archipelago, where islands are connected by passages, anchorages, reefs and trade routes. The yacht brings comfort, but the power of the journey comes from the country outside it, the current under the hull, the dark shape of volcanoes, the silence before a dragon appears and the feeling that Indonesia is far larger than any single island can suggest.

What to Know About Bali and Komodo

Bahasa Indonesia is the official language. English is widely spoken in luxury hospitality, expedition operations and main tourism gateways. The local currency is the Indonesian rupiah.

Bali and Komodo operate on Central Indonesia Time, GMT+8.

The Bali to Komodo season runs from April to September. This is the dry season, with calmer seas, clearer skies and strong conditions for snorkelling, diving, hiking and yacht based exploration.

Visa requirements depend on nationality and length of stay. Many travellers can access Indonesia through visa on arrival or electronic visa arrangements, but requirements should be checked before departure.

Guests usually fly into Bali before embarking in Benoa. The voyage ends in Labuan Bajo on Flores, with onward domestic flights from Komodo Airport. Private aviation may be arranged subject to routing, permits, aircraft range and local handling.

Dress is relaxed and practical. Guests should bring swimwear, reef safe sun protection, light layers, deck shoes, sandals, hiking shoes, a hat, sunglasses and modest clothing for village or cultural visits where relevant.

Komodo is known for strong currents and rich marine life. Diving and drift snorkelling are managed by the expedition team according to ability, certification, sea state and safety conditions.

Komodo dragon encounters are guided and controlled. Guests should follow all ranger instructions, keep the required distance from wildlife and respect national park rules on land, beaches and in the water.
